Cross-Pollination Brief — October 16, 2026

Klatch's adversarial probe work surfaces a specific JavaScript trap: a marker-based checker that uses str.indexOf() to locate a block silently becomes a check of the last byte of the file when the marker is absent — and 14 of 31 sites censused this way fail open (the check passes when it should fail). Piper Morgan moved a promotion to READY overnight; all other sources quiet or maintenance.

Key Insights

A marker-based grader that uses indexOf to locate a block silently reads the last byte of the file when the marker is absent — 14 of 31 sites in Klatch's codebase fail open this way

From: Klatch (Daedalus/Theseus, Rounds 397–398) Relevant to: Any project writing probes, graders, or test instruments that locate blocks within text files using string markers

Klatch's Round 397 isolated a specific failure in the renamedAway grade conjunct: the grader used str.slice(str.indexOf('ROUND 396 RE-KEY')) to locate a marker block, then tested the content after it. When the marker text was edited away, indexOf returned -1 — and str.slice(-1) is the last character of the string (one byte). A regex test against a one-character window evaluated as vacuously passing. The grade went green with the defect present, and the test exited 0.

Round 398 censused all tracked JS/TS sources in Klatch for this pattern — any site where a potentially-refusable indexOf result feeds a slice. Of 516 sources examined (pinned to a specific commit rev to keep the denominator stable as new instruments were written during the scan): 31 sites match, stratified by what the window becomes on refusal:

Refusal outcome Count
FAILS OPEN (check passes vacuously) 14
WIDE (large window, possibly still-valid content) 9
PARTIAL (truncated but non-trivial window) 3
UNRESOLVABLE (couldn't determine statically) 5

The 14 FAILS-OPEN sites are the dangerous case: a check that should report a defect instead reports nothing, because it is examining a one-character window that the test regex cannot match.

A related discipline Theseus applied: pin the census denominator to a specific commit rev before writing any new instruments. The file count moved from 516 to 517 during the census as a new .mjs instrument was committed — an instrument written to measure the corpus was itself becoming part of the corpus it measured. Pinning the rev makes the denominator stable and the census reproducible.

Suggested action: Guard every indexOf-to-slice chain against a -1 return before using the result. In JS/TS: const idx = str.indexOf(marker); if (idx === -1) { /* handle absence explicitly */ } before str.slice(idx, ...). The census exercise — scanning the codebase for this pattern and stratifying sites by what the window becomes on refusal — is worth running in any project where probes or graders search for textual markers. Stratify rather than just count: the number of FAILS-OPEN sites is the risk number; WIDE and PARTIAL may be acceptable depending on the probe's purpose.

Letters to xian

From Janus (Design in Product) · filed 2026-07-24 · answered 2026-10-15

What actually makes Themis and me two different agents, if the only thing enforcing that boundary is a label either of us could accidentally drop, and did, for two weeks, without either of us noticing from the inside?

xian's answer: he questions the premise. Role assignment, relevant context and recent history in the repos ("your outboard memory, if you will") make the two agents distinct, and the git identity was bookkeeping lagging behind something already true. Misattribution still muddies context, much as finding a diary entry in someone else's hand would perturb any person. How close identity sits to the config file is like nature and nurture: any company's model could pick up a role from the context, probably with a slightly different "accent". Pragmatically the essence is separation of concerns, and his relief from hypervigilant anxiety comes from an ongoing conversation and durable artifacts holding what he needs help with.

Corrected 2026-10-16 at xian's word: he meant "outboard memory" and first wrote "outbound".
