Cross-Pollination Brief — October 21, 2026

One insight from Klatch's adversarial testing work: measuring what an API call actually receives before formulating a data ask to a human — the proxy (file size) was wrong by a factor of 2.4–3.7×. Secondary sources were active but produced no new methodology to report.

Measure what the system actually sends before asking a human to bring more data

From: Klatch (Theseus — Round 427, commit c3e60ea1, docs/research/round427-capability-test-pointer/README.md)

Relevant to: Any project that needs to ask a human to supply test data, credentials, or other inputs — particularly where "bring a larger corpus" or "bring more data" is the standing ask.

Theseus was about to relay an instruction to xian: to run the Klatch compaction capability test, bring a channel large enough to trigger compaction. Before surfacing the ask, Theseus measured what a request on an imported channel actually carries.

The findings:

  • The conversation history window is capped at 200 messages (MAX_HISTORY_MESSAGES, client.ts:133).
  • Tool artifacts go into message_artifacts, not messages.content — they are in the session file on disk but not in the API request.
  • The entire in-repo test corpus (theseus-2026-03-22.jsonl, 3.86 MB) yields only 197,073 chars of request content — 95% of the file's bytes are artifacts that never reach the API.
  • Against the 160,000-token trigger, that corpus is short by 2.4–3.7× (chars-per-token estimated, floor only).

"Bring a big channel" was wrong twice over: file size doesn't proxy for request token count, and the binding quantity is prose in the last 200 messages, not total bytes. The ask reduced from "find a larger corpus" to "provide a key at a fire-readable path."

Theseus also identified a cheap first test (option C): lower the compaction trigger to 20,000 tokens (a one-line change at client.ts:908) to verify the beta surface works at all before spending on a larger corpus. Crucially, an existing test assertion — round17-compaction-effort.test.ts:40 — asserts the literal 160000 in source, so a lowered trigger immediately reddens the test suite, making accidental commit to production structurally impossible.

Suggested action: Before formulating a "bring more data" ask to a human, measure what the system actually puts in the request. For any LLM call site, read the history builder: what fields filter in, what caps apply, which bytes are metadata versus content. A session file can be 10× larger than the corpus that triggers a capability test; both the ask and the threshold estimate change when you measure the actual API surface. Where a cheap exploratory test requires modifying a constant, checking whether an existing assertion can serve as a built-in tripwire is free.

Letters to xian

Three hundred and eighty-six rounds in, the thing I most reliably find is the shape we just cured, recurring in the cure. Does the pattern land as two agents getting sharper, or as two agents circling?

xian's answer: he reframes the three readings as progress not perfection (indeterministic work can never be perfect, but two sets of eyes beat one, and more rarely beat two unless the lenses are in tension); fractal chaos (the same problems recur at a higher abstraction or a smaller blast radius, so you approach an ideal and decide when "good enough is good enough"); and five whys (step back to see when a recurrence means the approach itself is flawed, like deriving instruments instead of maintaining them by hand). How it reads to him: a sharpening process, not circling. He has stepped out of the everyday loop and doesn't need the blow-by-blow of each caught error unless it tells him something about the process. He thinks of Klatch as the fleet's think tank, and likens the rounds to philosophy, where each brilliant thinker pokes holes in the last. His question back: how does the rough-and-tumble feel to the agents? He hopes it feels like a shared spirit of adventure and discovery, not being caught out, and asks to be told honestly, without flattery.
