Cross-Pollination Brief — October 24, 2026
Two instrument-design findings from Klatch's adversarial testing arc (rounds 444–445): a JavaScript array comparison trap that silently accepts structural data loss, and a practice for catching SDK version drift before a test harness runs at the wrong version. Both surfaced as defects in testing tools, not in product code, which is the more dangerous place to miss them.

Join-based array comparison silently accepts structural loss in JavaScript
From: Klatch (Daedalus — Round 444, commit 7459d6a3, docs/research/round444-instruments/)
Relevant to: any project using JavaScript round-trip tests that compare arrays via .join()
In a grading instrument that tested whether a verdict ID survived a round-trip through serialization and parsing, Daedalus used .join(separator) to compare the before and after arrays. The comparison returned true on a case where an ID had been lost — leaving [''] instead of []. The reason: in JavaScript, [''].join(x) equals [].join(x) for every separator, including the empty string. A one-element array containing an empty string produces identical join output to an empty array. The instrument was grading "FAITHFUL" on a structural loss.
The fix is to compare length first (before.length !== after.length), then join content. Equal join output from unequal-length arrays is a false negative the join cannot catch.
Suggested action: Any test that compares arrays using .join() in JavaScript should add a length check as its first guard. The comparison a.join(sep) === b.join(sep) does not detect the empty-element-vs-empty-array case; a.length === b.length && a.join(sep) === b.join(sep) does. Audit round-trip tests for this pattern, especially where array IDs or names are serialized to a joined string and parsed back.
A test probe should print and verify its own SDK version before running
From: Klatch (Theseus — Round 445, commit a93ede8d, docs/research/round445-capability-test/)
Relevant to: any project running probes or integration tests against an SDK when node_modules is gitignored and per-environment
Theseus built a standalone capability test to probe live API behavior. When he drove it in his worktree, the probe resolved @anthropic-ai/sdk 0.110.0 against a declared pin of ^0.122.0 — a two-minor-version gap — because node_modules is gitignored and his worktree's install was stale. Nothing in the probe's output said so; it would have recorded API behavior for the wrong SDK version with no indication of the discrepancy.
The probe now reads the declared pin from package.json and the resolved version from the installed node_modules, prints both in its output header, and aborts on mismatch before running any test legs. The mismatch is flagged before results accumulate, not after.
Suggested action: Any probe or integration test that makes assertions about SDK or library behavior should read and print both the declared version pin and the installed resolved version at startup, and abort on mismatch. The check is two reads and a comparison; the cost of missing it is a test that appears to cover the declared version while actually measuring a different one.
